Emergent literacy and social emotional learning (SEL) go hand in hand in the preschool classroom. Solid SEL skills enable early childhood professionals to dive deeper and provide richer literacy experiences for children, but a great way to practice new and growing social emotional skills is through literacy activities! In this workshop, participants will learn the importance of combining SEL and literacy in the classroom as well as practical strategies to integrate the two topics into your curriculum and implement in your early childhood classroom.

Milestone matter – so let’s talk about them! As an early childhood professional, you want to make sure the children in your program are on track developmentally. Developmental monitoring and developmental screening are not the same thing; In this session, we will discuss the difference. Using a validated screening tool in your program will not only ensure that your families are aware of developmental milestones but will determine if a child’s development is on track or whether he or she needs to be referred for further evaluation. We will discuss the purpose and value of screening, talk about administering an appropriate tool that identifies a child’s developmental or social/emotional stage, and discuss referral and/or follow-up processes for children who score below a threshold.

Everyday Diversity: Representation in Literature Matters

The books we choose to share with our children matter. Representation and exposure to diverse experiences matters. When children are able to see themselves in books and stories, it sends a positive message that they belong and are important. As teachers, it’s our responsibility to select books that show representation of all children. Building positive identities and a respect for differences means weaving diversity into the fabric of children’s everyday lives. In this session we will discuss the importance of everyday diversity – incorporating books and photos which feature diverse children in everyday settings – in contrast to those celebrating cultural heritage. Participants will leave the session with strategies for choosing diverse and appropriate books for young children.

After school and during Summer are times where school-age children explore through play. Providers can engage children better by adding quality interactions, creating environments rich in learning opportunities, and have fun together. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) learning and loose parts will be discussed. Participants will research the difference between STEM, STEAM and STREAM. Participants will take away ideas to enrich their school-age classrooms with fun and appropriate learning experiences for the children in their care.

Using assessment and planning to support children’s development and learning will ensure effective operation of an early childhood program. In this session, the cycle of curriculum planning will be introduced. The four parts of this cycle include: 1) Observing and documenting; 2) Evaluating; 3) Planning; and 4) Implementing. Because this cycle is ongoing, early childhood professionals are involved in ongoing observation of children to assess developmental stages and progress and then using the observation findings to inform planning for individuals and the group. As participants practice observing and documenting children at play, interpreting their evaluations to discover a child’s development and then planning and implementing appropriate experiences for children, they will see how planning based on assessments will meet the needs of the children for which they are caring.  Participants will leave the session with strategies for ongoing and frequent informal assessment.
